The 1st Woosehill Hawks Cub Pack attended the Pillows and Pilots camp at the RAF Museum in London this past weekend. Everyone had a great time.
Kestrels got a taste of the ‘Latin life’ when they experienced an Italian evening at their recent Cub session. Highlights of the event included making and then tasting their own pizzas and other Mediterranean foods, completing an Italian word search, playing ballgames popular with youngsters from that country and building structures using marshmallows and spaghetti – possibly how the Leaning Tower of Pisa was first inspired! The verdict on the activities was a resounding “brilliante!” from the Cubs.
Steve Capel was officially invested as 1st Woosehill Scout’s new Group Scout Leader (GSL) at the Group’s first joint campfire, attended by all Sections.
Steve joined new Beavers and Scouts as they took their Promises and reaffirmed that he would ‘do his best’ as he received the Group’s distinctive blue necker from youngest Scout. Following the ceremony, everyone gathered round the roaring campfire to sing songs and enjoy hot chocolate, marshmallows and cakes. A great way to mark a new era for 1st Woosehill, welcoming newbies to the Scouting family and marking the start of a new school year for returning youngsters.
Hawks and Kestrels Cubs joined groups from all over Wokingham to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouts at a special District Camp. On Saturday 2nd July, more then 170 youngsters and Leaders pitched their tents in Arborfield to mark the occasion. As well as a roaring campfire and songs (including a choir!) on the Saturday evening, each Group was split into teams to compete against one another over the weekend in a series of fun and exciting activities. 1st Woosehill fielded three teams and their grit and determination was rewarded with all of them being placed in the top five and Team B claiming first place!
Thanks to all those who turned up to help us clear up the grounds around the hut today. Many hands made light-ish work and it’s great to have the place looking good for the BBQ next month.
There will be plenty of other opportunities to help out over the next few months so watch this space!
Flags from the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of 1st Woosehill Scouts were proudly displayed for the first time at Woosehill Community Church when they attended the Remembrance Day service there on Sunday 9th November 2014. Reverend Patrick King welcomed the 50 plus children, teenagers and their leaders as he presided over the service that culminated in the youngsters ‘planting’ their handmade poppies in the ground outside the Church.
Even the Quarter Finals of the 2014 Football World Cup couldn’t keep people away from the 1st Woosehill Scouts AGM and BBQ on Saturday 5th July!
More than 50 people arrived early in the evening for the AGM where they learned about the Group’s activities, watched a presentation of photos taken at the varied adventures the Sections had undertaken in the past 12 months and were entertained by the Swifts and Kingfishers Beaver colonies as they acted out the Robin Hood song and told guests the things they had enjoyed doing during the year.
Official proceedings over, scores of adults and children arrived bringing the total to 172 people who tucked into a tasty BBQ and enjoyed games and camp songs around the fire! Generosity was the order of the evening with a Cupcake Competition and Sale raising £50 for Cancer Research and ticket and refreshment sales adding £1,000 to 1st Woosehill’s funding raising account. Thank you to all who attended and gave so generously.
Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers from 1st Woosehill Scouts joined together to mark St George’s Day at St Paul’s Church, Wokingham on Sunday 27 April. Flag parties from each section gathered outside the church before marching up the aisle for a service led by Fr Richard Lamey. Having retold the story of St George (who is also the patron saint of the Scout Association) with some willing volunteers from the congregation a representative from each section joined their Leader to retake their Scouting promise. The youngsters then braved the rain to parade their flags back to the Scout Hut in Chestnut Avenue where a well deserved drink and snack awaited them.
Despite a last minute venue change due to flooding, 1st Woosehill held it’s first Gang Show at The Holt School on Saturday 8th February and it was a roaring success. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders sang and acted to a capacity audience. 1st Woosehill went On a Bear Hunt, met a Gruffalo, danced with elephants and monkeys, visited Narnia, showed that had the X Factor and performed funny sketches and traditional camp songs. £456 was raised from tickets sales, raffle and refreshments. Many thanks to leaders, parents and young people for a fantastic show.
